The Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act provides consumers and customers of house hold appliances protections as well. What most people don’t know is that the lemon law does not just apply to cars, but it also applies to any consumer good used or purchased primarily for personal, family or household purposes.

Most people don’t ever think that a washing machine can be a lemon. But it can. Often people don’t even realize that their water heater has a warranty, but it does. Household appliances can be very expensive. So why should you be stuck with a defective appliance. Regardless of the price, even if you bought a microwave that costs a few hundred dollars, why should you have to fight with the manufacturer just to get it to work correctly. Consider all the appliances in your home: refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, washer/washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, water heater, espresso machine, coffee machine, toaster, blender, vacuum, etc. How much do these appliances cost? You spend a lot of money on them so you should get what you pay for.

Manufacturers like GE, Samsung, Whirlpool, Dyson, Amana, Maytag, LG, Shark, wolf, Bosch, Viking, Subzero, and more have no problem selling you their products, advertising them as the best, but when it comes to fixing problems, they will often try to avoid their responsibilities and won’t stand behind their warranties. This is unacceptable.

California’s lemon law prevents these types of practices. If the manufacturer of your home appliance is not able to fix a problem within a reasonable number of attempts, they must offer to repurchase or replace the appliance. On top of this, if your appliance is a lemon, the manufacturer must pay for your attorney. However, manufacturers will never offer you a refund on their own as required under the law. They count on the fact that most people don’t realize that they have legal rights.
